When we start university, we know all about what subjects we are going to study and what textbooks we need. What most of us don’t know is that being involved in university sport is an awesome addition to the university experience. Here are 8 reasons why you should join a sports club this year:

1. It’s a great way to meet new people and make lifelong friends

Many of us move away from home to start university whether it be across the state, from interstate or overseas. Even if we haven’t moved most of us sit alone in the first couple of lectures wondering how we are going to meet new people and make friends. Joining a sporting club is a great solution – you will be seeing likeminded people on a regular basis. It’s an opportunity to expand your social network and form bonds that can last a lifetime.

2. It’s good for your wellbeing

We are all supposed to do a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day and for good reason! Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which leads to improved concentration, enhanced memory and helps inspire creativity, WINNING! It also releases endorphins which improve your mood. Most clubs have regular training and games scheduled so there are plenty of opportunities for you to keep your body and mind fit and focussed.

3. It’s a brilliant way to balance study

If you’re getting frustrated with an assignment or having trouble studying for a test, shut your laptop and go outside. Taking a break from your studies to have a kick of the footy or to shoot some hoops is an awesome way to recharge and de-stress. What better way to do this than by joining a club? Plus, it’s great time management practice; having to attend regular training commitments and club get-togethers will help you to plan a schedule and avoid procrastination so you can make sure you get all your assignments in on time.

4. You can boost your CV with transferrable skills

Participating on the field isn’t the only way you can get involved in a sporting club. It’s important to gain experience in order to build your CV/ resume before you finish your degree. Volunteering for sporting clubs allows you to gain experience in a variety of positions, including as a treasurer, secretary, social media manager, event coordinator, team manager and coach. That real-life experience will hold you in great stead with future employers once you graduate.

5. It’s an opportunity to represent your university

Being part of a team and achieving success together is an incredibly rewarding experience. There is nothing like working your butt off at training during the week, playing sport on the weekend and celebrating a win with your mates. Outside of the club there are opportunities at UniSA to participate in intervarsity sport with SA Challenge and UniSport Nationals Div 1 and Div 2, as well as on-campus events like the VC Cup. Joining a sport club could be your foot in the door to represent your university at this level.

6. You’ll get the chance to try something different

These days there are a wide variety of unique sporting clubs to join around the country. Ever wanted to play ultimate frisbee? What about try Shodokan Aikido? Maybe you’re interested in rock climbing, or even participating online in eSports? Joining clubs is a great way to try something different and who knows, you might excel at it. UniSA Sport clubs welcome new members at all skill levels, so it doesn’t matter if you have never played a certain sport before, just get out there and get involved!

7. It’s easy to join, super affordable and you’ll get access to great facilities

With gym facilities on all campuses, and courts on most it’s easy to find a training session that suits you or even organise a social game to improve your skills.
Some UniSA Sport clubs offer membership from as little as $20 annually, working out to be a lot more affordable than many community clubs across Adelaide. Not to mention access to great facilities like Pridham Hall. With four metro campuses our clubs are spread far and wide and there is bound to be a club close to where you live.

8. Most importantly, it’s fun!

Playing sport is a terrific pastime – it gets you active and outside, it lets you unleash your competitive spirit and best of all you get to meet new people and make life-long friends.

If any of these great reasons spike your interest or you just want to learn more about UniSA Sport clubs, head to the website and check out all of the clubs you can join this year. We are here to help you achieve your health and fitness goals, so come and speak to our friendly staff on all four campuses to get involved. Can’t wait to see you out on the field!
